Helena Bonham Carter arrives for the AFI Fest 'The Crown' Gala Screening on November 16^ 2019 in Hollywood^ CA

Helena Bonham Carter will no longer appear in Season 4 of HBO’s The White Lotus, exiting shortly after production began on the new installment.

An HBO spokesperson explained the decision in a statement, saying, “With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.” As a result, “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

The upcoming season 4 is set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, with filming taking place across the French Riviera, including Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and parts of Paris. The story will primarily unfold along the Côte d’Azur, continuing the show’s tradition of using real luxury locations as stand-ins for its fictional resorts. The anthology series has previously filmed in Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand, with each season introducing a new setting and cast.

Season 4 features a large ensemble cast, including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet, among others.
